Also, having to constantly check back to be able to renew the book
must be incredibly frustrating. Especially if you have other real life
issues that you have to deal with, checking back constantly to see if
you can renew your book would take a lower priority.
And indeed, many people have had their books expire only to have them
snatched up by someone else who doesn't put all the work and effort
into fixing up everything that needs done to the book. Lots of times
holds are for a very good reason, like handwritten parts need typed
in, fractions need fixed, formatting work needs done, etc. And as we
all know, people don't respect holds all of the time, and if there is
no hold, the person who snatches up the book doesn't even know what
needs done to the book and may just submit it for approval without all
of the work being done.
