Thanks Judy,
Oh no! Not hidden codes! <smile>
I will keep this message, but first, I'm going to hook up one of my
older scanners and scan some of the pages that have these borders in
them and see how they come out. Then I'll do a small book and see how
that goes. I have two older scanners that still work, a 3600 and a 3900.
Hopefully one or both of them will work in Windows 10. I just have to
copy the drivers from my Win7 laptop, which still mostly works, plug one
of them in and try it.
If the borders don't turn up using one of the other scanners, then I'll
have to stop using this 4800. If they still appear, then I'll look into
the options in MS Word. I'm hesitant to start with that though because
this is happening with quite a few pages and doing this procedure for
each one of them sounds like it might add up to a substantial amount of
extra time.
I'll report back when I have results from one of the older scanners.

Word may be adding borders to individual pages and individual paragraphs. It
usually does that by picking up hidden codes that are in the rtf from the scan.
I've seen this in older scans, but rarely in recent scans for anyone. I did see
it recently from a scanner who uses Kurzweil and it was a border around a
paragraph.
I'm not sure how to fix it if that's it. The only way I know how to find them
is to go to the pages with the border and then start looking at the various
border options and make sure all of them are turned off. The damn with a
paragraph with a box around it. Look at all the border options for that
paragraph. There is no generic search that I am aware of that lets you find
borders in Word, unfortunately.
I don't know if the borders get stripped out when the books are converted. If
you need an answer from Amanda, it might be a good idea to email her directly
as I'm not sure how often she checks any of the lists.

I'm copying this to the Volunteer list in case anyone else wants to chime in.
I did drop the scanner a couple weeks ago. I didn't mention that in my initial
message because, besides being a little noisier, the scan quality seems to be
the same, and I can't remember whether the problem started before or after
that. Given the coincidental nature of dropping the scanner and this problem
starting around that time though, I suppose there might be a connection. I
didn't think of it before you mentioned it though.
I didn't intend to drop it of course. I was coming in from outside, and I
didn't notice that the USB cable that I use to plug it into the laptop had
fallen on the floor. It got caught under my chair and when I moved the chair,
before I noticed, the scanner got pulled off the desk. It was pretty loud when
it hit.
So I put it back up and it was a little louder when it scans, and quite a bit
louder when it returns to the ready position or whatever they call that, but I
didn't notice any difference in scan quality. That's why I didn't make any
connection to the scanner. Perhaps I should have, but I didn't.
If you think it really could be a hardware problem, I can hook up another
scanner and see what happens. I need to scan a whole book because there doesn't
seem to be any way of predicting on which page the boxes will start. But I will
do that and see what happens.
I am also curious as to what anyone else might think about your idea of it
being related to the scanner. I can't imagine how it would cause that kind of
issue in a document though.

Hi Larry,
I'm using the 4800, not the 3600.
You might remember, I got a 4800 at about half price back in February of 2021.
So that can't be it, unless something in this 4800 is going out already.
It was only slightly used when I got it, but still....

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Problem with Recent Scans
Hey Guys,
Recently my scans for Lissi have started to develop an anomaly. At some random
page, she starts seeing frames, borders, boxes, around each page, just one line
surrounding each page like a box. It goes on for many pages, but not
necessarily to the end of the book. Each book is different as to where this
phenomenon starts and where it ends. It has begun in the newest book earlier
than the previous ones, which may indicate that whatever it is is getting
worse. It's not a feature of older scans, and she has not seen it in scans from
other people. When we discovered that, it made me think that something is going
on with my laptop, instead of her desktop, although I cannot imagine what it
might be. That's why I'm writing here.
I'm using K1000 version 13.01 to scan these books, and I can find nothing about
borders or boxes in any of the settings. I have not knowingly made any changes
to my laptop in the past few weeks.
I do have MS Word 365 on here, but I never brought any of these books into it
before sending them up to be proofread.
I did try putting a book with this problem through K1000 again, then Wordpad,
but it apparently had no effect.
Just to cover every base I could think of, I've checked and borders are not set
in her Word 2010, which makes sense since these lines around pages do not
appear in other peoples' scans, nor in scans older than a few weeks. She's
proofing one of those I scanned last year and there's no sign of these boxes or
borders.
Two questions:
First, does anyone have any idea what else I can try to get rid of these things?
Second, does anyone know, (Amanda, I'm thinking of you especially), if a book
is checked in with these lines around some of the pages, what Bookshare's
processing will do with it? Will it choke, or just ignore them, or remove them?
Thanks for any advice, guys. This is an odd one for sure.
Evan
