Hi Jess!

Yes, the running headers are things like the title and author that
appear at the tops of pages. Actually, very occasionally they appear at the
bottom, but then they're footers, but I muddy the water, sorry. Sometimes
the running header will also be the story or chapter title.

I always put page numbers at the tops of pages. In print books they
can appear at the top, bottom, and sometimes even along the side margin of
the page. That varies from book to book. Since placing the page number
above chapter headings to make sure that they don't get stripped seems to
work best for protecting chapter headings, it just makes sense to me to
place them all at the top of the page.

Sorry that wasn't definitive, but since the placement of the page
numbers in print books isn't absolutely consistent, there isn't a hard and
fast rule.

Good luck. Hope you're having fun!

Mayrie

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Question about the placement of page numbers and
question about running headers.

Hi all,

For those of you that do not know, I am validating a book that
has two page numbers on some pages and none on some. I recognized
that the pages that had two numbers were meant for the pages that had
none. For instance, in the attached file, the first page has pages 12
and 13 on it, but no page numbers on the second page. It would be
logical for both pages to have numbers. I found out that I can fix
this problem. Now that I know that, my next question is: can I place
the numbers either at the beginning of the page or at the end?

In addition, I saw a posting on this list about running headers.
Are they things like the title and author?

Regards,

Jess
