Well, "s" instead of "z" in words is an English
vis-a-vis American spelling, though why Faulkner would
choose to use tht, I don't know. Maybe it's Southern,
or he read a lot whenyoung and picked it up. smile For
some reason I don't understand, I tend to spell gray
with an "e" instead of an "a." Maybe I saw it too much
on mustard. smile. Or in the books I read as a child
and youngster, most of which used English spelling for
grey. Also for sonme other words I can't think of now,
I use, or used to use, "z" instead of "s, and vice
versa.

When I find spellings like that in books, like the o u
r suffixes instead or plan o r, or variant spellings
that the author uses, I put in the long synopsis so
people will know that's the way the author spelled the
word. In one book I did recently there was only one
word that was weird, but it was the author's choice,
and not a mistake, so I didn't change it.
