Yes, the things that you describe are common. It just takes some time for
new volunteers to create working relationships with other volunteers. Just
keep checking the checkout page and something will show up, I'm sure.
You do have software to use to proofread, such as Microsoft Word, right?
That's crucial.

That's interesting. I've noticed several on the check out list that I would
have taken except for the fact that they were held for other people. And I
also noticed that there were sometimes upwards of five or six held for one
person. Is this normal?
