Hi, Julie and everyone! In my humble opinion, Ruby was the best version of OpenBook. They've added some new features since then, but I just think it's gone downhill from there. <Smile> Take care!

Hi, Monica. I'm so glad you've had such a positive experience with Kurzweil.
Of course, that's what I use and I expected nothing less. <smile> I'm glad
you're liking it, and if you can ever get your hands on a full version, I
know you won't be disappointed. I've never had OpenBook, and the only one
I've ever used was Ruby way back when. <smile> I've been using Kurzweil
since version 6, though, and love it. Take care.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Thoughts On K1000

I installed a demo of K1000 this morning, and I want to share that
experience here. I have to admint that I'm a little shocked right
now because while I knew there would be an improvement with K1000, I
honestly believed that many people were exaggerating its
abilities. Now that I see k1000 in action, I'm wondering why anyone
would choose to go with Openbook by choice. I'm not saying that out
of snobbishness. I mean that if people could compare them side by
side with the same machine, scanning the same book, few people would
by Openbook. If anyone is on this list and is debating which
program to go with, please insist on trying both programs yourself
instead of assuming that your local technology salesperson knows
what's best for you. You may end up liking OB, but please make sure
of that for yourself. As for me, I didn't insist on a comparison,
believing that Openbook had to be good if that's what others in my
area were using. I feel a little sick realizing that I made a dumb
choice. Kurzweil will give you a free demo to try if you ask. I
think ignorance is what keeps OB around right now. I was able to
proofread a book in roughly 12 minutes, a book that took me several
hours in Openbook. Vocational Rehab counselors need to know that
there's such an enormous difference in software ability. Our state
is exclusively Freedom Scientific, and I think it's time to change
that at least with regard to OCR software. I'm going to sit down
and write my former counselor a letter and describe my experience
with K1000. Maybe that will help someone else. I'm just shaking my
head in bewilderment, wondering why nobody locally has even seen a
comparison between the two systems. This is how scanning should
be... fast, reliable, and configurable.
