Hi Folks,

Here is an expose on one of the geekier points of proofreading -- font sizing
for machines.

The files you send in get run through several converters to become
DAISY-formatted final files. One of the converter algorithms inserts
navigation. Navigation works because of coded cues to the DAISY player. These
cues allow it to distinguish a title from a section heading or from body text.
Navigation cues are designated by font size.

Our algorithms follow these rules:

Any book may have only four levels of navigation
Each level must be separated by at least two points
Body text must be under 14 points

Our practice is to make the title 20 point font.
If we make body text 12 point font then we have a natural 2 point cascade from
title to body font size that allows for all four navigation levels:

Title = 20 points
Section headings = 18 points
Chapter headings = 16 points
Sub-chapter headings = 14 points
Body text = 12 points

Of course, not all books have four levels of navigation but if you apply what I
have outlined above you will never go wrong.

Hi Debby,

I'm sure this is an individual preference but I'd bold and enlarge all three
lines in your illustration! Just my thoughts for whatever they're worth! Ha
ha! Have a great day! Happy proofreading!
