Hi, Carrie, I wonder if I fall under "deranged perfectionist" at all. I try not to lose sleep over what I proofread, but I notice I tend to talk shop with other volunteers doing the work, and as I said, I think if one is proofreading, one should read the whole book, hence, I choose to proofread what I'd normally want to read because I'd rather enjoy reading the book while I'm getting rid of stuff that should be deleted, making sure the format is up to snuff, and oh yes, I'm really concerned about readability. How the book will read for readers of Braille concerns me because I happen to be one and I have an idea of how Braille looks on a page. I call it "wanting the book to read and look pretty". I've never proofread a book without corresponding at a regular basis with the submitter. I think it's a matter of courtesy because I'm doing stuff to the submitter's baby, as it were, and I have a hope that should the submitter take it into his/her head to look at what I've proofread, hopefully he/she will breathe a sigh of relief thinking: "Thank God she didn't muck up the file!" I'm not one of those who have piles of stuff to proofread, though. I like to do stuff which takes my fancy. Does that make me a dilettante perfectionist (smile)? Answers greatly appreciated for purposes of immature need of reassurance and validation (every day meaning for the word this time [smile]). I am not a jiffy proofreader because when I decide to do a project, I read the whole book from word first to word last. I am the picky soul who asks submitters about the book pagination, copying snippets of text into emails to assure myself concerning what the submitter knows is in the book when I'm in need of knowledge. I'm wondering what jargon word will suit the perfectionists in the group. We certainly have our own set of abbreviations and acronyms. What other online community can hold such erudite discussions of ellipses, scanner settings, or British punctuation for so long? Where else can you cause such turmoil if you confuse "submit" with "check-in"? As we brainstormed what sort of orientation and training material to create for new volunteers we found that we had generated a word list that could be the start of a glossary. Read through the list below. If you think of other words, acronyms, or concepts that we might be helpful for new volunteers gather them up and email them to me or - if you want to hold the discussion online - post them to the list for others to add to. Enjoy the long weekend.
