Hey Amber,

Actually, with hardcover books you can bend and flex the spines, and it will
not hurt the book.

To "loosen" them up without "breaking" them.

Open the book and pretend to read it very fast. take each and every page
and flatten it as far as you can, as you turn each page, if this hasn't been
done with the book it will be done eventually so the books will have this
look eventually.

Smile. This way you can get the best flat scans.

I also line the very center of the seam over the edge of my scanner and then
push down on it.

Haven't "broke" a hardcover yet.

Paperbacks, now that is another story.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] binding frustrations

Hi all:
I get all of my books from the library. I have a question. I don't have
this problem with paperbacks, but with hardbacks, it's a real problem. I
always think I'm pushing down hard enough on the spines, but I always get
cut off words, or sentences, and I think it's because of the binding issue,
and it's just on hard-backs. Because of the spines, and them being library
books, I don't want to break the spines. Is there any other suggestions you
can give so I can get better non-cut off scans?
Frustrated,
Amber
