The submitter of a book will be shown whether or not you're logged in.
It's the email address of a submitter that isn't shown unless you're
logged in. Since Shannon posted on this list about scanning the book,
my money is on the author finding Shannon's message on Google. Many
authors and speakers set up Google alerts to email them or send a text
message to their cell phone to notify them whenever someone posts
about their name or their books. Google indexes our mailing list daily
and displays the results of that index within anywhere from 12 to 48
hours. If the author has an alert set up, she'd see a post about her
very quickly and could fire off a rude email without breaking a sweat.

As for how she contacted Shannon, Shannon's email address is pretty
easy to find once you have her name, the first part of her email
address as Freelist shows it, her IP address, and/or signature line. I
found her email address and web page in less than 2 minutes. So this
author didn't conduct some sort of deep search hunting for Shannon.
She just used her technology, clicked her mouse a few times, and wrote
a rude, ill-advised message.

By the way, I have an alert set up for my name and email address since
i write and publish articles. It's a very common practice, and it
doesn't take a high level of skill to do this. If you're curious about
what's being written about you, you may want to give it a try. You'll
see what's out there and can take steps to either protect your privacy
or link to what you find if you're trying to promote yourself and your
work. You might be pleasantly surprised.
