Jill,
I'm not sure what software you are using, but in Word, you can set it to show tab and space characters. In Word 2003 and before, this in under tools, options, and on the view tab. I know I've looked up how to show these marks in Word 2007, but I'd have to look again to see where to show them. Window-Eyes will read these symbols, as long as miscellaneous punctuation is turned on. I'm not sure about Jaws. Of course, you can have your screen reader set to say space when it encounters one. However, I always do a find and replace all to get rid of multiple spaces. Though, according to my understanding, the tools will automatically replace multiple spaces and tabs with a single space. That said, I still replace them, just the perfectionist in me. I don't believe that the tools preserve centering, but, you can highlight the text you want to center, and then press control e to center it.
That was probably way more information than you really wanted to know.

When scanning or proofreading, is there any way to tell when there are extra spaces or tabs by just listening to speech? Also where do I find instructions for centering? TIA. Jill
