You might want to be a little careful buying software on Ebay. It is completely legal to sell a software package that you have bought and have chosen to no longer use, although companies may have requirements in their license agreements that, for example, ask the seller to notify the company when it happens. It is not legal to sell a software package that you plan to continue to use (of course). Further, and here is where it gets slightly tricky, it usually isn't legal to purchase an upgrade at a dramatically reduced price and then sell the old version. If you look at the upgrade license agreement, you'll find that you aren't buying a new license - just an upgrade to an existing license.

I have occasionally seen copies of both Kurzweil and Openbook on Ebay. I can only assume they are being sold by family members of people who are either dead or ill beyond recovery. If you'll settle for Kurzweil 8 or 9, you'll find those more often. Same thing with Openbook Ruby and Openbook 5. Don't buy Ruby to work under XP though. Save that for machines that run Windows 9x or maybe Windows 2000.

Sorry but I was referring to someone dying or no longer needing/wanting to use the program for any number of reasons including illness. That's why I used the work ghoulish but I find it no more so than donating ones corneas or heart when no longer needed.
