George, I use Outlook 2003, and GMail works wonderfully. OE does too.
You just have to turn on POP access in the GMail settings, and you can
use any email client you like. Gmail even gives set-up instructions
for 15 different email clients including OE, Outlook, Eudora, and
Thunderbird. They have some Mac instructions too. Cool, huh?
