Hi Peggy,

What kind of indentations were you putting in at the beginnings of paragraphs? If you were adding tabs, then no, that's not what's wanted. All tabs will be replaced by the conversion tool that bookshare uses and each turned into a single blank space.

While you can use Microsoft Word (for example) to format paragraphs to have an indentation, the preferred format for a proofread book is no indentations at the start of paragraphs. However, as a sighted volunteer, I personally find it easier to format a book that I'm working on so that it does have a formatted indentation at the start of each paragraph as it helps me find certain kinds of errors.

If you were using Microsoft Word like this and using the formatting commands to format paragraphs so that each has an indentation, it's OK to do if it helps you personally proofread better. But be aware that the bookshare conversion tool will strip that formatting and line up each paragraph at the left edge as part of the conversion process to DAISY XML and braille formats. So if you are doing it to make the book look like a printed book -- don't. smile. It's wasted effort. And don't do any formatting by adding a tab in front of each paragraph either -- make sure to instead use your wordprocessor's formatting commands.

Hope that helps!

Hello Bookshare community,

Providence Island is the first book that I have proofread for Bookshare. I submitted it hoping to get feedback as I indicated in my submitting comments. My specific question is about indentations at the beginning of paragraphs. I had provided them page by page for the first chapter, and I was asking if this is what is wanted. I don't feel that the proofreading is completed. In fact I have continued working on the file which I have saved.

I don't know how to interpret what I see on the Book Processing History for Providence Island. I read in succession:
update
validate quality analysis (score 82)
update
convert
validate quality analysis (score 93)
accept
and finally, update-new DAISY segmented file

Does that mean the book has been accepted? As I said, I don't think the proofreading was complete, and I want to know what to do about paragraph indentations. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Peace,

Peggy Min
