Darya, just to reassure you, I don't think you are being targeted. What happened was that you started posting some messages about your personal life and no one had a specific problem with that. In fact, several of us were rather interested including myself. You also started offering apologies for off topic messages and wondering if you or any of us who were participating with you were going to be reprimanded. It was that part that got a thread started about off topic messages in general and some people strongly object to them while others are okay with them. It really appears to me that the comments are about off topic messages, not about you nor about your posting off topic messages. Since you are new here you don't know what has come before. In the past off topic messages have nearly taken over the list. There was once that the subject of favorite foods overwhelmed us and several people unsubscribed because of that. I will admit that I have been responsible for some digressions too. When someone suggests something that sounds like censorship to me my blood boils and I start posting objections to censorship and that can cause a spike in list traffic too. The point is that there have been problems with off topic threads long before you came on board and so it does not take much to spark a lot of discussion about the off topic topic of off topic messages. So don't worry if you think someone is objecting to you. I really don't think they are. And speaking for myself, a person who tends to be inundated with email too, I am quite interested in your health situation. I cannot help feeling compassion for you and being concerned. Concern means being interested in your progress and prognosis.

anything. If for some reason any message it doesn't happen don't jump down my
throat. I have enough stress in my life without being forced to handle this on
my own. I like you guys and I appreciate the support but please do realize that
an off-topic thread is not going to kill the listserv. It's not like we spend
our lives discussing little else. In fact if anybody's interested I'm about
ready to start proofreading my first book. Expect more about that in the very
near future since this is my first one and I'm working with a rather ancient
computer that may or may know behave.

Bob, One of the lines Madeleine quoted from the purpose of the volunteer list
was something to the effect of using it to get to know each other; I can't
remember exactly what it said, but I posted it recently.
We are a community, and become friends, and in general we care about each other
and what's going on in each others' lives.
I do agree, though, that the subject lines should be specific, so we can
quickly decide if we want to read the post or delete it before reading. Maybe
the subject line could even include who the post is from, which might give
added information about the subect (e.g., if it's from Daria it might be more
about her health) or fromDornetta, about her twins)--or knowing from whom the
post is might give us an idea of the tone of the post , knowing how various
people write, smile

Hi folks.

I totally agree with Deborah. But, I would go a few
steps further. These messages have nothing to do with volunteering, or books, or
bookshare. Therefore, they have no place on either bksvol or
bookshare-discussion.

Obviously, bookshare staff is going to renege on
there obligation to maintain the quality of these lists, so it's up to us, the
membership, to maintain that quality.

I don't mind happy birthdays, or a few "ot"
messages, but, this... is... over... the... wall... .

Now, I have to go get another coffee
fix.
