I have opened literally hundreds of rtf files in kurzweil using the context key and then arrowing up to open with and choosing kurzweil (again with arrow keys or first letter).
Shannon I do not know what may be going on with your particular system. Perhaps your file associations are set up in such a way that your results occur as they do.
