There is a book in the collection entitled "State and Revolution" by V. I. Lenin that I had a devil of a time scanning because the margins were too close to the spine. I finally managed it, though, by scanning one page at a time and checking it before going on to the next one. Most of those pages I had to scan several times to get them to come out right. It was published by International Publishers and I used to read books published by that publisher regularly back when I could see. The tight margins were not a major problem then, but looking back on it I do think that it was very common for them to print books with those margins tight to the spine.
