Hi Vallerie.

Sometime ago I proofed a book that consisted of three books all starting with page 1, and, if memory serves me right (an incredibly unlikely proposition) the tool did fine with it.

In the case of Mayrie's book that reversed the page numbers, I'm not sure I blame the tool for barfing on that.

I also find the idea of a table of contents of page ones incredibly funny.

I think it was just publishers were lazy and put previously printed books together to sell again without modifying anything. However, since Bookshare will renumber for them, you would have to ideally modify the TOC or add a new page number atop the old one (less preferable.)

Hi Valerie,

If there is indeed a table of contents, then, yes, I'd make a proofreader's note describing the change in numbering. However, if every story in a book
of short stories starts on page 1, doesn't the table of contents look
something like this?
Story First ... 1
Story Two ... 1
Story Three ... 1

And if so, what's the point of having a table of contents? That is just
strange, and seems a little nonsensical to me. But maybe that's just me.

Thanks for the quick reply, Mayrie!

If the tool cannot handle unique pagination, would you then make a note on
the TOC that the tools changed page numbers and bracket the new ones?

I suspected what you are saying was true, just want to ensure peopel
learning to navigate with book tools can do it more easily.

Thanks!
Valerie

Hi Valerie,

I'm pretty sure, given an issue I had recently with a book with
strange page numbering, the conversion tools will barf on books with
repeating page numbers.

Here's what I suggest. I'd renumber all pages in chronological order
regardless of the fact that each story in the book starts again on page 1.
So, you have a book with the typical page numbering sequence.

I recently dealt with a book that the publisher decided to give page
numbers in reverse order. The tools can't handle that. So, I don't
think they can handle multiple pages with the same number, which is
what you'd get when a book has several stories, each beginning on page
one. So, in short, and finally shutting up, I'd number the pages in
the traditional manner, starting at page 1 and continuing in
sequential order until you reach the end of the book.

Question for the group;

On books that have more than one story and each story starts again at
1, how does the tool handle that so the Table of Contents is true? My
kids books like that (more than one story to a book) have no numbers,
but it seems all my teen/adult books like that start each story at page 1.

Thanks!
