Someone not familiar with the K 1000 may not understand that Kurzweil has a dual numbering system but the scanner needs to take advantage of the "user sets page number" option which means that we set them page number at the first Arabic numeral page number so that if the book has an introduction or other material in roman numeral page numbers they are not included in the pagination but Kurzweil also number the pages in terms of beginng of book to total. Thus the story may begin at page 3 which is where I begin my User sets page number with number 3 but in the strip under the book there is Page 3 but also below that may be something like Page 13 of 385. This is what I call the Kurzweil count. Without using the user sets page number, the only number the computer shows it what I am calling the Kurzweil number and it will rarely match the pagination on the pages themselves. In all the books I have done, even after converting them to RTF, I have never had a problem with that pagination as long as the contents of the book has page numbers that are matching the ones on the page. To do this one has to begin the page number with that Arabic numeral. Kurzweil will label all previous pages as "preliminary page #x". The only other thing one must be careful of is to include all blank pages after the Title page so as to keep the pagination matching.

Hi, Jackie,

This is the proper place for this message.

But I am a little confused by your message. I have scanned dozens of books in two-page mode with K1000 and before that with OpenBook. I do it all the time. I haven't seen any book I have scanned where the page breaks did not correspond with the page numbers. If this happens, then I am curious how it occurs. Some setting is wrong perhaps? Since page recognition is an OCR issue, two-page mode should work fine with the standalone versions of the OCR engines that OpenBook and K1000 use, such as FineReader, Recognita and Scansoft.

It's hard to say more without knowing what software you are using, but if it has a two-page mode, then the page breaks should correspond with the page numbers while scanning two pages at the same time. If whatever you are using has this option, make sure it is set before starting to scan.

Sorry I can't be more helpful than that.

Evan

Hello, all:

I don't really know where this should go so if this isn't the right
place, some1 tell me where 2 take it & I will.

I just had a book rejected because page breaks don't correspond
w/printed page numbers. The manual says there should be a 90%
correspondence. I have a few concerns about this, which I wish 2
express, & then I'll shut up.

1) The volunteer was correct, according 2 the manual, 2 reject the
book, so I need 4 her 2 understand my problem is not w/her. She did
what she was instructed 2 do.
2) My problem is w/the policy. Specifically, when a paperback is
small enough 2 scan 2 pages at once, I think it's ridiculous 2 expect
a close page number correspondence. It will discourage people from
scanning because scanning will take twice as long since each page will
need 2 b scanned individually. That's not fair, not to the person
submitting the book & not 2 the readers.

I really hope that this policy will be reexamined & some changes made.
The volunteer acknowledges that it was an excellent scan, that all
copyright & publication information was present, & that the only
reason 4 rejection was the issue of page numbers. Yall, that's not
right.

Again, if this isn't the proper venue, plese accept my apologies &
tell me where to go, as it were. If it is, then I hope some
productive discussion can be generated & some resolutions obtained.

Thanking every1 in advance for their attention.
