Hi, Valerie, I'm speaking strictly for myself as a Braille reader, but I
think if those pictures are on unnumbered pages, don't number those pages as
it will throw the rest of the book out of sequence. Maybe what you can do
(if it isn't too much trouble and you want to do it) is number the pictures
and just write captions where appropriate. The way the NLS program handles
it is to put the descriptions of pictures at the front or the back of the
book before or after the text. This isn't always so. I have a web Braille
cookbook called The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook by Christopher Kimball, and
it's quite disconcerting for me to be reading a recipe or something and come
across a line that says "text continued on page (name page number)". The
reason for the text interruption was because there were charts or tables
with pictures with them. I don't know whether this could be put down to bad
book design or what. I wish that when the charts or tables were first
mentioned, they would appear right after that so the recipes I was reading
wouldn't be broken up. Gripe, gripe, gripe! It really depends on whether the
pictures convey information the text does not. If they're just pictures with
simple captions, then put them where the text won't be interrupted. I've
also just thought that at the end of each chapter you could write "pictures
in this chapter" but that might be too much work. Just do what seems right.
Regards, Kim. P.S.: This is not really anything except my opinion on this.
I've heard the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, but since I
can't see them, they don't really convey that much to me unless the captions
are described and then I think "That's interesting" (but only in a mild sort
of way). K.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] picture inserts

I have over a dozen unnumbered pages of pictures in the middle of Backstairs
at the White House that I am moving to the end of the book. Should I
continue numbering them for navigational purposes?

Thanks!
Valerie
