Asterisks are optional after chapter headings. Asterisks should be added
at scene change, time passing, etc. HTH

Confused, sorry. Do we need three asterisks in between chapter (number) and
first line of text instead of a blank line? If so, same would hold true for
titles of chapters, right? Understand asterisks if scene changes. Is this
optional?

font than the text, this is another way of showing the distinction between
the chapter number/title and the text, but if you want to show that there is

wait-a-minute, do I understand you to mean here that if the chapter title is
16 point Bold (and in some cases caps) and the text is, as usual, 12 point
lower case, the space can be a space and the asterisks aren't needed? I

Some clarification: the converter removes blank lines. Unless there is
something to note that the line is blank (such as an asterisk or three),
the converter will squish the text up. The reason we added three asterisks
was to note that there was a blank line between the chapter title/number
and the text, and we used three asterisk to show that there was not a
mistake or random character. This is also why the asterisks are
unnecessary after the page break but before the chapter title.
As we have stressed before, consistency is key. If you want to note that
there is a blank line in the text between the chapter and the text by
putting in three asterisks, that's fine. If you would prefer to increase
the font size to point fourteen (with the text size at 12 point) and bold
the chapter name/number, this is also fine.
If there is a blank line elsewhere in the text, or if there is a symbol
showing a change in scene, etc., please note this with the use of one or
three asterisks. I would recommend using three asterisks rather than one
to make sure that it is clear that there is a change in the text and not
some random character on the line.

chapter name. This is all new to me because for so many years we were
told to put a blank line to protect the Daisy navigation. It seems
counterproductive to me to put the triple asterisks were there should
be a blank line. Also, I would think that the Bookshare tool would
bring those asterisks up to the same line as the Chapter 1. The
Bookshare tool does not like chapter names of the same font size to
be on separate lines, so it will bring them up onto a single line.
But that leaves you without a blank line to separate all the chapter
stuff from the paragraph.
Why can't we just leave off the triple asterisks? Much simpler and
much cleaner. And we don't have to worry about what the Bookshare
tool is going to do. Also, wouldn't you rather listen to just the
words than to hear your book reader telling you * * *?
