Hi Folks,
Those of us who use screen readers don't know there's a blank line there
and there's not one in Braille. Who is the blank line for, preserved or
not?

The space will be removed by our converter. People have been adding in
asterisks to show that there was a blank lines/space in the text (because
once the books go through the converter, that space will not be there).
Please use your best judgment. If a new chapter is noted by a name or a
phrase, it might be more helpful to have the asterisks to show that the name
or phrase is not part of the text. However, if the new chapter is called
"Chapter Three," this is likely obvious enough for people to understand that
there is a new chapter and the asterisks might not be as crucial. Please
keep things consistent, whatever you decide to do.

Some clarification: the converter removes blank lines. Unless there is
something to note that the line is blank (such as an asterisk or three),
the converter will squish the text up. The reason we added three asterisks
was to note that there was a blank line between the chapter title/number
and the text, and we used three asterisk to show that there was not a
mistake or random character. This is also why the asterisks are
unnecessary after the page break but before the chapter title.
As we have stressed before, consistency is key. If you want to note that
there is a blank line in the text between the chapter and the text by
putting in three asterisks, that's fine. If you would prefer to increase
the font size to point fourteen (with the text size at 12 point) and bold
the chapter name/number, this is also fine.
If there is a blank line elsewhere in the text, or if there is a symbol
showing a change in scene, etc., please note this with the use of one or
three asterisks. I would recommend using three asterisks rather than one
to make sure that it is clear that there is a change in the text and not
some random character on the line.

We have recently been told to put the triple asterisks after the
chapter name. This is all new to me because for so many years we were
told to put a blank line to protect the Daisy navigation. It seems
counterproductive to me to put the triple asterisks were there should
be a blank line. Also, I would think that the Bookshare tool would
bring those asterisks up to the same line as the Chapter 1. The
Bookshare tool does not like chapter names of the same font size to
be on separate lines, so it will bring them up onto a single line.
But that leaves you without a blank line to separate all the chapter
stuff from the paragraph.
Why can't we just leave off the triple asterisks? Much simpler and
much cleaner. And we don't have to worry about what the Bookshare
tool is going to do. Also, wouldn't you rather listen to just the
words than to hear your book reader telling you * * *?
