Dear Booksharian Friends,

In most books the Roman numerals are lower case. NLS always uses lower case so I do too.

An extra little factoid. NLS In telling us the length of a book on the first page, The number of pages counted with roman numerals is written first followed by the number of Arabic numbered pages,
like i - xvi and 1 - 189.

The NLS system is neat because the preliminary pages are counted separately.

Bookshare can be confusing because it gives the length of the book by combining both the Roman and Arabic pages, giving the impression the book has too many pages.

Always with love,

Lissi

I think all the ones I've done have been lower case because that's the way they were in the print book. I haven't checked the bookshare books, of course, to see if they remained, but my impression is that the stripper strips identical things like headers, and since page numbers, whether arabic or roman, would be different on each page they shouldn't be stripped--theoretically. smile Maybe someone could download As Nature Made Him and check the first few pages--after front and back flap info--and let us know. smile

I'm just starting to validate a new book and I'm
working on the preface,
which has Roman numerals. So in light of the recent
discussion about
page numbers, can someone tell me how the stripper and how
your text
readers (I'm a sighted volunteer) deal with roman
numerals. Do I need to
make sure that they are all lower case, e.g. xii or all
upper case, e.g.
XII?

And will the stripper realize that they are numbers and
leave them alone
if they are at the top of the page?

Thanks, and thank you Allison for your neat to-do list.

Devorah
