The combination of Word and JAWS does not give any indication that those quotes and apostrophes are anything out of the ordinary, so don't expect to know if you were successful with your find and replace operation. I hope that option in the auto-Text menu that says "Replace quotes with smart quotes" doesn't basically mean the same dumb quotes, but it shouldn't since i haven't noticed weirdness coming from Word files I've created. I only see if their are unusual characters if files are opened with Kurzweil or my braille note.

If it is any comfort I have recently gotten, what I assume was scanned material from some other sources and Open Book is certainly not the only program to create undesirable punctuation marks, and in addition you get some weird line break paterns. That just goes to show that we mostly use high quality software and are better at turning out consistent nicely presented material.

Yes you'd need to do the find/replace in another word processor,
because if you write a quotation mark or apostrophe in Open Book, they
still come out as close quotes, etc.
