I would suggest that if you want to protect children you would better serve your purpose by directing your protective energies toward something that might actually harm them.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] the adult content issue and check boxes

Hi, all, I admit I've not read all the posts about the VAT's adult content proposal. I do however applaud and have been wanting distinctions similar to NLS where we are told in the annotation whether a title has strong language, violence, sex, and if it is some, the occurrences may be fewer than if it just says descriptions of or strong language, and I like the fact that if the sex descriptions are explicit we know about it. As someone who has typed medical reports for 11 years, I've had occasion to search out something that internet filters might not let me have, so I've not had occasion to use them, and I'm not a total prude on things, but I have had the question when reading book synopses on romances if they are just light romance, a heavier romance, mild descriptions of sex, explicit descriptions of sex like what is in the NLS library or erotic romance or other erotic material. Could we create a separate category for erotic romance or could there be a check box somewhere so those of us who may not want to read this could have a heads up, and if that is what someone is looking for, they will know right away what to read. Parents would also know what not to let their teen or child read. I'm not for censorship or anything like that as long as someone doesn't attempt to force any genre of books upon other people or slam certain genres when they do not fit the bill for their reading tastes. There's plenty of room on this earth for all types of books and all types of readers, but adult materials do not belong in the wrong hands of children and/or others not mature enough to handle questionable content. I hope this helps bookshare staff and the VAT come to a helpful conclusion in this matter so that we can protect children and not cause controversy. Thanks and have a blessed day.
