Hello Stephen and all,
If the level of understanding is in a field that resonates with belonging, I
understand atonement to mean that one acts out of carrying guilt. Whether the
guilt belongs to one or not. The person atoning is taking something that does
not belong to him: ie taking responsability for something that happened either
to him or another. Guilt is taking responsability for that something, when
actually, nothing could have been done about it in the first place; if it could
have, it would have. It is a form of unnecessary suffering caused by the child
within (unconsiousness) ,who thinks if I suffer, it helps. This is a form of
acceptance that weakens the person and the agreement is a movement that is life
negative. There is no growth in that.
On a higher level of inner adult awareness, that moves beyond belonging, there
is atonement (suffering) if one remains unaware and unconscious.
Unconsciousness is the only form of atonement or suffering and for that only
the individual is responsible, there is no other. Here we can accept "who we
are and all that has happened as our destiny", and continue to grow in
awareness with that. This gives strength, and is life affirmative.
Responsability becomes individual response-ability (the ability to respond.)
The idea of forgiveness is orientated towards the perpetrator, but what happens
to the victim? The whole idea of forgiveness is perpetrated by perpetrators!
The victim is overlooked. Superiority overlooks the victim and the perpetrator
from both sides and there is no balance in that.
Now this idea of being sorry. What is the effect of that? Does it transform or
change anything existentially? Or is it political, polite, a form of agreement?
Is there any life in "I am sorry"? Does that grow anything? Does it give any
strength or does it weaken? How does it feel from the inside?
My own personal understanding is that sorry is needed when love is not. When
love and respect, awareness and understanding are there, sorry is not needed.
In Australia the issue of "saying sorry" is a collective one for our indigenous
and non indigenous population. A few days ago I was reflecting upon "sorry" and
the words..................
"I will if you will".................surfaced.
It means "I align my will to power, with your will to power."What is the way to
do this?
We focus upon something much bigger than ourselves ....we look to the
planet....to earth....and we move towards that, no matter what it costs us.
This is my commitment, and if it is your commitment also................no
apology is needed by anyone........respect is there, love is there, integrity
is there and things move beautifully by themselves. In this way any form of
restitution or recompense for "damage" is never needed.............we simply
pay by ourself, individually and alone.
As always it is a question of direction and pattern interuption.
Kind regards
Sadhana

Subject: [ConstellationTalk] Atonement in Family Constellations
Fellow colleagues,
I am currently reading *Beyond Forgiveness: Reflections on Atonement* by
Phil Cousineau. The book is a series of interviews and essays from a
variety of philosophers, spiritual leaders, psychologists and
psychiatrists. It has had me reflect on Atonement inside of Constellations.
It could be said that "atonement requires accepting who we are and all that
has happened as our destiny." I am uncertain that this is explicitly
conveyed in many constellations. Since the practice I learned is not to ask
for or grant forgiveness; but, to acknowledge one's responsibility by
saying "I am sorry" I am wondering where atonement fits in. In particular I
have not experienced any form of restitution or recompense for "damage"
done in our work.
I am curious to know your thoughts and welcome any edification on the
matter of atonement within a Constellation.
Sincerely,
Stephen
