As I understand the notion of "atonement" from Christian theology, it is a
replacement for revenge or recompense. The one who has been wronged
relinquishes the right to punishment by acknowledging the common humanity
(or divinity) of both the victim and perpetrator. What results is regained
dignity for both parties. What needs to be righted is an indebtedness that
cannot be righted no matter how hard the wrong one works.
The closest we come to this in constellation work are sentences like "What I
have done cannot be undone" and "I take full responsibility." These express
the weight of what's taken place, and puts the perpetrator into the position
of utmost vulnerability.
Day to day human interactions unfold differently, and there is a place for
recompense as a proper part of regaining common ground. But it doesn't do it
all by itself. Even then there is the point at which the victim regains so
much dignity that they relinquish the right to more punishment, no matter
how rightfully owed.
"Restorative Justice" by the way is the only approach I know of in our legal
system that seems to be really struggling with these sometimes opposing
movements in regaining full human dignity for all involved.
I'd be interested in hearing more of what Cousineau argues about
forgiveness.

Subject: [ConstellationTalk] Atonement in Family Constellations
Fellow colleagues,
I am currently reading *Beyond Forgiveness: Reflections on Atonement* by
Phil Cousineau. The book is a series of interviews and essays from a
variety of philosophers, spiritual leaders, psychologists and
psychiatrists. It has had me reflect on Atonement inside of Constellations.
It could be said that "atonement requires accepting who we are and all that
has happened as our destiny." I am uncertain that this is explicitly
conveyed in many constellations. Since the practice I learned is not to ask
for or grant forgiveness; but, to acknowledge one's responsibility by
saying "I am sorry" I am wondering where atonement fits in. In particular I
have not experienced any form of restitution or recompense for "damage"
done in our work.
I am curious to know your thoughts and welcome any edification on the
matter of atonement within a Constellation.
Sincerely,
Stephen
