Im glad for the responses to my question about fate and destiny. Its good
for me to share minds with our far flung community.
As a way of responding back, I will side-step talking about fate and destiny
directly, as each message is complete and stands on its own. Rather, what
this calls up for me are passages from William Irwin Thompsons book The
Time Falling Bodies Take to Light.
The soul is above time, seeing past present, and future at once. From the
point of view of the ego [the I], everything is linear: the past is behind
and the future is up ahead. The consciousness of time for the ego is
diachronic, the consciousness of time for the soul is synchronic. When the
ego stops
time is gathered up into a single space of consciousness.
In his classic essay, The Structural Study of Myth, Lévi-Strauss argues
for a point of view in which all the variants of a myth are brought together
in a single imaginary space without a concern for their historical context
We define the myth as consisting of all its versions.
Libraries have been burnt and whole religious movements wiped out because
their beliefs and myths have been considered to be dubious by the upholders
of orthodoxy; yet it is sometimes precisely the heretical myth that opens a
doorway into the archetypal world.
Every new school of thought teaches us something and adds a new tool, but
in the process every new school of thought over-generalizes its contribution
and ends up by trying to shape all information with its peculiar monkey
wrench
Lévi-Strauss claims that all variations of a myth must be considered; I
agree but also feel that all modern schools of thought are the equivalent of
variations of a myth, and all must be taken into account. I prefer to avoid
the tedium of a foolish consistency and take what is interesting from all of
them without committing myself to any of them.
The responses to my question of fate and destiny reflect our diversity as an
on-line community. We could read influences of astrological, shamanic,
Anthroposophical, and secular humanist schools of thought. There is no need
for us to settle on one particular definition or perspective. Each is a
valid expression of our collective cultural heritage.
This is to applaud all the contributors and to appeal to anyone who
refrained from adding their voice to the choir because they were afraid of
getting it wrong. We come to know what fate is, and what destiny is, not
from rational analysis and logical argument, but from the myriad of painful
and joyous ways these patterns come to us. Our work is assist others (and
ourselves) in coming into conscious contact with our own fate and own
destiny.
Thanks for all
Dan

Subject: [ConstellationTalk] Fate & Destiny
I enjoyed the discussion and like to put in my two cents worth.
Fate
Fate is what ever has happened. I don't know all the reasons and
causes, It becomes a distraction to figure them all out. All I know
that giving it a place in my heart moves love along in time and
maturity.
I use the word in constellations as I see it helps the represented
soul find a place in it's heart for the "unagreeable" experience
(loss, hurt etc.). Allowing the intellect to rest on a completed
object allows for the movement that was withheld from completion by
the individual soul.
Destiny
There is only one destiny for everyone. You can't have two destinies.
It is inevitable. Though I can't foresee it logically or define it
intellectually, I know it does exist in the timelessness where I am
always my father's son. I do have a sense of it, a relationship with
it. it is mysteriously there.
How can I tell if my actions change an outcome? There is no knowing
of what would have happened if I hadn't done what I did. I can only
influence the apparent or expected outcome by my actions. I every
point of decision I will do only one thing.
Choices or responses to life, inner and outer, are my responsability
that lead to my destiny.
It was helpful for me to be faced in a constellation with someone
representing "my Destiny". I moved to a deeper trust to participate
in the direction my life was going.
