Dear Patricia
My response does not offer what you are asking, but it is from my heart and
soul none the less.
Perhaps your precious friend is coming to the end of his days, and the most
loving thing you can do is join him there and walk alongside him. I have a
little experience with Parkinson's disease, and I would suggest that the
disease is quite well advanced by the time the swallow reflex gives up.
I completely understand that you do not want your friend to die... and I get a
sense of a life well-lived, one that you could help him to reflect on and
honour. Sometimes, often, we are so focused on living, or trying to sustain the
life of another, that we miss the opportunity of really being with death, our
own or that of another, and that, to me, is a tragedy.
When you step back and feel into what is going on for your friend you will
either resonate with what I write, or not.
If you do resonate, I leave you with a poem: (And I would be very happy to
speak with you if you wish.)
Your grandest parting
Be not sofocused on your living
that youmiss your death –
it is yourgrandest parting.
Imaginethis! You have an invitation
from theQueen of Death to dine with her,
sobow!
Be washedand clean –
resentmentwill not grace
the tableof your Queen.
In quietmoments feel the honour
of the callof death,
and bowagain –
this is abow-full time.
Be not sofocused on your living
that you missyour death –
it is yourgrandest parting.

Dear Colleagues,I have been enjoying your posts for some years now but this is
the first time I am writingA dear friend of mine is in hospital in Ireland with
Parkinsons and a suspicion of Motor Neuron disease. He has trouble swallowing
and has had pneumonia twice in the last months due to aspiration. Now the
hospital is not giving him any food and he is quite weak, although the
pneumonia seems to be resolved.I know there are codes for the brain. I wonder
if any of you have experience with restoring the swallowing reflex? This is a

Sending you fond regards and thanking you for your consideration of this
