This started out as a single observation of permission. It turned into
two. First this one:
Regarding a facilitator/coach getting fired after showing a corporate
coaching client something of her interior through imagery: I wonder if
there might have been a permission issue.
I have spent much time observing Francesca Mason Boring facilitate -
since I am co-ordinator of her trainings in Alberta, Canada. I am
constantly impressed with how often she asks permission - even during a
constellation - for this or that. She seems to have a fine sense of
where the edge of permission is - or perhaps where bringing the
question to the client's or representative's attention, is helpful.
In observing Gunthard Weber work, I also noticed he was so very careful
to work within the boundaries of stated permission and always came home
to that, at the end.
I've also seen how it is possible to ignore these boundaries and plunge
into wherever one feels they "should" do the "good" of the client or
issue-holder.
Working within very clear permission is like a physical manifestation of
standing in service to another. It's what makes us trustworthy, isn't it?
This is the message I tried to send last night - then . . .
_Follow-up_: I had no sooner sent this off (using a wrong email sender's
address so that it was bounced back) than we convened our twice monthly
Learning Circle. Here is an excerpt from the notes of that session:
A question was posed as to whether one of the facilitators wanted a
constellation on her resources and her doubts. She said, "no," but as
she did, one person in the circle draped herself over her chair and
began making repetitive movements with her arm - not noticing what she
was doing. Noticing this, one of us suggested that the field had
something to say on the matter. So this person stood (Standing Person),
weaving somewhat unstably, with her arm still flopping back and forth --
as if reaching for something. Soon, another person from the circle
stood, facing Standing Person. As she watched, she became impatient. By
this time, Standing Person was focusing down to her own near right.
Another person in the circle seated herself on the floor next to
Standing Person where the latter was looking. Saying "I feel very
small," she took Standing Person's hand which stabilized Standing
Person. With her other hand, she held the feet of Standing Person.
Standing Person said to her, "you /are/ small." One in the circle
suggested that Standing Person say to Little Person, "I'll take care of
you." She did so and this made Standing Person even stronger and made
Little Person very happy. "This is what I'm here to do," she said,
smiling - holding Standing Person's hand and also her feet. Other Person
rejoiced to see all of this taking place.
It was decided by the "representatives" that Little Person was the inner
child of Standing Person and that Other Person was a future self of
Standing Person. The facilitator who said "no" took all of this in. One
member of the circle observed, "so much for permission." As we closed
the circle and thanked the field for what had been provided, one of us,
at the end, honored "those who are waiting for this work." A couple of
us felt a rush of energy as those words were spoken. It is a mystery.
It is a mystery, but one thing seems clear: that it is the family system
that gives permission.
