Annie - I had a round of conversations with the Administrators of a
private school for developmentally disabled teenagers. The issues that
stopped up from going forward were not clinical questions about working
with this population (though there were plenty of those), but procedural
questions close to our recent exchanges about dual relationships.
In discussing the possibilities we agreed that school administrators
operate in a world of stakeholders. They have overlapping and sometimes
conflicting responsibilities to many parties: students, parents, court
personnel, security officers, teachers, school staff, elected officials,
Board members, committee members, etc. Information moves between these
interested parties according to strictly defined protocols. For
example, if a teacher suspects a student is being abused, she is bound
by written policy regarding who she may or may not communicate with and
what she may or may not say.
Constellations working with students and/or parents in this setting
immediately brings up obstacles. The constellation ordinarily reveals
concealed information, such as pregnancies, abortions, parent's former
partners, secret desires, hidden loyalties and entanglements. Imagine
the risks your school administrator client would be taking to sponsor
such a process under official auspices. I won't waste pixels to give
examples, but I can think of all sorts of troubling scenarios.
I am certain there are ways to work around these obstacles, a way to
protect confidentiality, avoid bureaucratic flare-ups and conform to
professional standards. I, too, would be interested in hearing from
those in German-speaking countries where the work has gained
considerably more acceptance as to how they use constellations in school
settings.
