Yahoo Easy Transfer:
After rearchitecting the transfer process, Groups.io has turned back on
group transfer requests and has extended the deadline until Thursday,
December 5th, 2019 at 9AM Pacific Time. Keep your fingers crossed that
Yahoo's servers stay up that long.
To be totally clear:
This means you have to GIVE THE GO-AHEAD for your transfer (complete Step
5) by this deadline. Simply initiating a transfer, or paying for Premium
Yearly, or completing any of those other preliminary steps will not ensure
you a spot in the transfer queue.
Do not procrastinate...get started on this NOW, so the delays involved in
inviting the transfer agent and making it a Moderator do not come into play.
Those who have paid but are not able to execute an Easy Group Transfer will
issued a refund upon request. Just email Mark at support@xxxxxxxxx and he
will refund your money and delete your group.
*Premium Yearly* or *Enterprise* plan required.
Transfers require pre-payment of an upgrade of the group to the *Premium
Yearly* or an *Enterprise* plan. (You cannot be on a month-to-month payment
plan.)

This page collects "best practice" advice for transferring a group from
Yahoo Groups to Groups.io. Note that the word "transfer" is used to
describe the process, but in fact the automatic Easy Group Transfer
<https://groups.io/static/transfer> mechanism copies members, messages and
other content from your Yahoo Group to your Groups.io group. It does not
make any alterations to your Yahoo Group.
*The group transfer process is a series of steps. Don't try to skip ahead,
the steps must be performed one by one and in the given order or else the
transfer may stall or fail.*
This advice on preparing your groups is necessarily generic and some of it
may not apply to the circumstances of your particular group, so use your
best judgement about adopting this advice.
Note: the shorthand *Y!group* refers your existing Yahoo Group, and
*group@* refers
to your new Groups.io group.
IMPORTANT!! While any owner of the group@ may initiate a transfer, *only
that owner will be able to manage it to completion*. Other group owners
will not have access to the transfer status via the *View Existing Transfer
Status* list at the bottom of the instructions page. If you have owner role
in the group by way of more than one log in address you can manage the
transfer only via one of them.
ALSO IMPORTANT!! At Steps 3 and 4 of the process, someone must invite the
transfer agent to your Y!group and promote it to Moderator. This does not
need to be the same person who initiated and manages the transfer from the
Groups.io side, but this person must be either an Owner of the Yahoo group,
or a Moderator with invite and promote privileges. If you don't have this
capability, and are not working with someone who does, work on getting
these privileges now. Otherwise, the transfer cannot proceed.

I haven't posted to CT before. I'm a constellation facilitator and a loyal
reader and, like all of you here, I love constellation work. In my day job,
I work in the tech industry and operate an internet forum with about 5
million users.
I agree with Mishra and others that CT will do much better to continue as
an email list. Many members, including some of our esteemed elders, do not
have accounts on Facebook, Nextdoor, or other platforms. We will lose them
if we try to make such a switch. There are many other problems with these
platforms too, but perhaps that's for another discussion..
For email lists, Google Groups and Groups.io are options. Another one that
looks excellent and has a fine community spirit is
https://www.freelists.org/. The question is whether any of these
providers could also integrate the previous history of ConstellationTalk
(all 18 years' worth of emails!). I've emailed both Groups.io and FreeLists
to ask them this. (Google is too big to ask.)

and it would have to start soon*." Did you hear this from Groups.io? and
could you say what you understand the migration process to be?
I will be happy to pay someone who wants to do the "shepherding", if we
can find a way to do it. We may also have the option to first 'reboot' CT
on one of these other email list providers, and then deal with the
migration later, as long as a download of the archive exists.

have made the list so valuable since I joined in 2005.
Looking to the future:
I do hope C-Talk doesn’t migrate to Nextdoor.
I’ve used Nextdoor for years to stay in touch with my physical
neighborhood, which is what the platform is designed for; one chooses which
tiny geographical areas one wishes to broadcast to and receive from.
Nextdoor is full of ads, even more than Facebook. Both those platforms
are more about serving ads than serving information.
And I have ethical objections to Facebook’s content standards and
practices, so I also hope we don’t go to Facebook.
I am on a different list (Copyediting-L) which recently migrated to
*Groups....io* — another of the platforms recommended by Yahoo.
That list remains purely about the subject content, as we have been
accustomed to on C-Talk at Yahoo all these years.
I have no experience with Google Groups, but I have found several other
Google services to be purely about content — aside from bringing you into
the Google ecosystem, where the commercial hook is not directly based on
advertising.
