Dan,
I like the etymology of the German word for "destiny" which is
"Schicksal." It consists of two root words, "schicken,"
which is the verb "to send," and "sal" which is a
variant spelling of "Seele," which means "soul." So the
picture of destiny then is "sending forth the soul," which
implies going on a voyage, or on a long journey.
From the anthroposophy developed by Rudolf Steiner: he speaks of two
streams of time, one Time-Stream flowing from the past into the present,
which can be called "Fate," while the other is a Time Stream
from the future, which can be called "Destiny," aspects which
you and Diane and Bill have touched upon. We exist always inthe present
moment, which is the confluence of these two opposing streams --- thus
at any moment in our lives, we are experiencing the dynamic clash and
collision of Fate and Destiny.
If you ever watch two opposing streams of water collide, youwill notice
the formation of eddies, or little vortices or whirlpools in thewater.
This is a great physical model manifestation of our presentconsciousness
as human beings --- we are not the water; we are not the streams of fate
and destiny colliding; rather, we are the vortices, the very whirlpools
themselves!
The vortex or whirlpool or tornado or hurricane is the only form that a
substance can take in and of itself and it is self-sustaining. Let me
explain. If you fill a glass with water, you see that the water takes
the form of the glass. But there are two different substances here:
glass and water, and thus Form and Substance are different.
Ask the question: what Form would water take by itself and in itself as
the one and only Substance? The answer is: the whirlpool or vortex
form. If the substance is air, then the self-sustaining vortex form is
the hurricane, tornado, or cyclone, which comes into being out of the
collision of two opposing streams of either air or water.
Notice how a hurricane or tornado vortex is "born," lives its
life-span, and eventually "dies."
Now apply that to us human beings. What is the substance identical
to form -- of our particular vortex, or torus or cyclone of our life?
The substance is Time (noun) and the form is Timing (verb). When the
two opposing currents, one of Fate (Time-noun-past) and the other of
Destiny (Timing-verb-future) collide, we manage to exist, but only as
the hurricane or tornado of Time itself --- having been born, then
learning to "self-sustain" for the length of our life span, and
then we die away.
Where do we find the vortex form in daily life, where it is much more
difficult to see, only because the time span involved is so large?
(A whirlpool in your bathtub "lives" for a few seconds; a
tornado in Kansas "lives" for a few hours; a hurricane in the
Gulf of Mexico "lives"for a few days; but apples, animals and
we humans live for a much longer time, years to decades to a century, in
fact.).
So the difference between us and the hurricanes and tornados that ravage
our planet is in the self-sustaining reality of life itself, which
occurs over a much longer span of time than the examples I've given
above.
How does life sustain itself? Consider the apple, which has a vortex
form, the toroidal form (like that of a bagel without a hole). But what
is in the center of the "eye of the hurricane" of the apple?
You find the apple seeds.
It is the seeds which will generate a new apple tree which will grow new
apples in the future precisely out of the "death of the apple which
falls on the ground, decays away and leaves the seed. (Isaac Newton
never thought of that aspect of the apple!)

See there Stan's model of Continuous Creation, which is the essence of
our self-sustaining life as human beings. Notice the central diagram of
the torus, along with with the toroidal forms of apples, trees, and
magnetic fields.
(I add that, in physical substance, on the molecular level, we have the
vortex form of the DNA molecule with its double helix of form and
substance. And as it manifests in our phenomenological world, we see
it in the very helical vortical twisting of the veins and arteries
sround the umbilical cord between mother and fetus.)
Stan cites the verse of Genesis I:11, which sums it all up for us as
well as for apples.
And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed,
and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, whose seed is in
itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
So, Dan, to answer your wonderful question: Fate and Destiny collide in
Time to make us who we are in Space, self-sustaining there until we die
--- but what about our "apple seeds" in the respective
"eyes" of our particular "hurricanes?"
It is your destiny, Dan, to answer that question throughyour ongoing FC
