I'm doing a happy dance right now.
Got it working, yay!
So, I guess it was a comedy of things in the wrong order.
Once I went and chose midi 1 for input and midi 1 and 2 for output in
the midi dialogue in options,
then I went to control surfaces, mackie control 1 showed none for
in/out ports. So finally I deleted it and re added it and there it
came.
The sweet sound of flying faders.

all I can say is that I have a mackie universal pro as well and it works
very well so far. It's a joy to have some faders at your disposal. I
never
managed to adjust some effects tough. Perhaps you know how to do this and
could show me sometimes. If you need more help in setting it up, we could
check everything on skype if you like. I also got a word file with the
layout description some years ago which I can send to you if you like.
