Probably for volume, with slight changes if the reverb was to somehow stay
at it's volume it was. You wouldn't want the reverberation on one file
louder than the reverberation on something else. And no, panning wouldn't
work unless you got the pitch changed first. I wanted to make one sound on
the left, and the exact sound on the right, almost sound like it was
surrounding you and instead it came out as monno, even though it was a
stario file. I don't use Sonar because I need to fix a couple things before
I can use it. But from my knowledge, you'd have to change the pitch first
before panning it. But that sounds like a good idea, even though I don't
think I'd have too many audio tracks in my files anyway.

Hi there. Maybe make several copies of the vocal and:
1. change the pitch ever so slightly of a couple of them, without changing the tempo. This will introduce slight amounts of disonance, that would occur if several people were singing the part.
2. nudge some of the tracks along by a few miliseconds; not enough to be obvious, just enough to make them not start absolutely together.
