Hey Bob!
The recording and the rendering bit depths are two different things!
You can record at 24 bits and still render your file at 32 bits if you want 
with Sonar.
But, remember that at some point, you'll have to dither down to 16 bits anyway 
if your going to burn an audio CD.
I usually do this in Sound Forge but with Sonar 6 now I tend to  render my 
files at 16 bits because the  dithering algorithm used is very good.
So, I record at 24 bits and export my file at 16.
A second hard drive is, in my opinion, a necessity.
I'm not familiar with your sound card so I can't comment on it.
