SSD's are blazing fast for samples. I'm in the process of putting all my
libs and such on some. The read problem isn't really as bad as it was
exaggerated to be. The thing to watch for is 3d cells which most
manufacturers are now using; some drives suffer tremendous spped loss when
transferring large data, due to bad implementation. But with prices dropping
like tomatos and the pay off being almost instant project loads when using
omnisphere, superior drummer and kontakt among others, it makes for a good
investment IMO. Of course that's not for everybody, and it would require the
user to know how to best care for SSD drives to make its lifetime a nice
long one lol.

Not sure really. Using an external 7200RPM SATA III drive here. Guess you
could go thunderbolt for those also but usually that's not where any
slowdown in system performance is. Usually it's processor speed and RAM. I
know solid state drives have come down a lot but there's still the issue of
read cycles on those. I know that's not the issue that it used to be
however DAW builders such as Jim Roseberry over at StudioCat still aren't
going with those as audio drives. Solid state would be great for a sample
drive say on a desktop system as loading samples would be instantaneous.

I use my Ext drive, not a Solid-state, but it really is fast on the Mac. I'm
def gonna get a new USB ext drive next month though. Only have one and need
more space. You know how that is.
The Mac has the flash storage drive though.
1 tb in it as well.
:)
Any good Recommendations for Ext drives?
I have a little "My Passport 1tb" ext drive here.PLEASE READ THIS FOOTER AT
