Nicaise:
if I'm sighted person I won't be on this list!
I by myself use midi card.
but as I understand from Woolf question,
does he need midi card to use the midi or he can use the USB connection?
that's why I answer yes you can use the USB.
I know its easier to use midi card but maybe he is not ready to spend more
money for something that it works even with other blind people on other list
as I mention .
my perpess is to help.
if you can't use the USB this doesn't mean that other blind users can't use
it!
and I don't think that you have to write what you wrote in your post .
this is my right to give my opinion as a member of the list.
thanks for yours but shouldn't be always right!
thanks
William

William,
I know you mean well. However, when individuals like Wolf are experiencing
difficulty accomplishing things and come to the list with questions, it is
important and very important that we address their issues in ways that are
practical, easily and reliably achievable and work, and lastly ways which
will give them joy and maximize their productivity. To tell them "you don't
need a sound card... And send them to get sighted assistance ..."is not an
answer especially, in the case of Wolf since he had already described his
situation and seemed to have already done the very thing you tried and made
him do again. Either you have a solution you know works and you tell them
step by step how to go about it or you don't and you step back because the
last thing you want to do is further confuse them and add to their anxiety.
I have always been a proponent of what is reliable, practical and works. I
have been in the music sequencing business for almost 20 years starting in
the DOS era. I currently own and use a Yamaha Motif, so I am speaking from
direct experience. There is a place and time for everything. There is
certainly a place and time for USB-MIDI connection no question about that.
For instance if you want to remote-control playback / stop your external
sequencing program on your computer straight from your music instrument
while you are performing live on stage; if you want to transfer data fast
and reliably between your computer and your music keyboard, remote voice /
parameters editing from your computer, etc, in addition, if you are sighted
and you can afford the luxury to mess around with control panel displays and
all their various and multi-layered menus before and afterwards you can
certainly forego the good old fashion standard MIDI set up for sequencing
purposes. But as a blind user the reliable, practical and hassle-free way to
do things is to get yourself a
MIDI card and a pair of MIDI cables and you will have a very nice working
experience.
So Wolf and all the others if you are reading this I stand by my earlier
suggestion. The only thing you will have to do is to simply set your music
keyboard to receive commands from the external sequencer (e.g. pressing song
or pattern mode buttons for Motif) and that's it! You will be in control.
Your time will be spent on making music and not worrying about settings or
prompts on displays you are not able to see.
I now rest my case, which ever way works for you that's where you go but I stand by mine.
Thanks,
Nicki D

Hi Nicky D, and William,
my midi connection via USB is just as it's supposed to be. I can apply the
different patches to the tracks. This is provided by using Utility
[F5][Sf1] with the focus set to "all". The funny thing is that the effects
that ar added to the patch are only transmitted for the patch on the track
that is set to channel one, while the other patches on tracks 2 etc. are transmitted without the motif-based effect. I've tried a lot of things so far, but didn't succeed.

Hi Wolf: first install the USB driver for the Motif so you can use midi with Sonar threw USB connection but you have to change the Motif to work with USB and not Midi connections. you can find this setting in the utility menu. as I remember, press utility then F5 then SF4 and you are there! check with sighted person this. thanks William

Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Inserting Modulation control
Wolf, This is what you need to do--
In order for you to do multi timbral / multi tracks / multi channel
sequencing with an external sequencer e.g. Sonar with your Motif both
your
motif and Sonar need to communicate with one another through more than
one
MIDI channel. You will therefore need a MIDI board e.g. edirol um,
sporster,
etc via which your keyboard and Sonar will talk to each other. So get
yourself a MIDI card and a pair of MIDI cables; that's for the hardware
part
of things. You will then need to configure Sonar to work with your MIDI
card. From that point on you will have a standard MIDI set up and things
can
begin to happen for you. If you need to know where to buy MIDI cards and
cables, I would suggest you talk to Dancingdots. If you have further
questions on this you can reach me at my direct e-mail-
"nicaise@xxxxxxx"
and I will give you my phone number. So don't worry you are just a
couple
of steps away.
I hope that helps.

It's just like that. I only connect via USB.
If you give me your phone number via Private mail, I can call you. I'm livving in Hanover, Germany.
Are you on skype?

Wolf,
Now that you described your set up I may have a better picture of the
situation. When you say you are connected via USB do you mean that you
actually have absolutely no MIDI interface board (e.g. Edirol UM, PS/E,
etc...) and MIDI cables connecting your Motif to Sonar? The answer to
that
question will determine what I tell you next. The way you are currently
set
up, only channel 1 is transmitting and receiving.
Also if you are in the US you may want to contact me over the phone so that we can sort this out for you quickly and get you on your way to producing music and all that good stuff.

Hello nicaise D,
thank you for your information. However, I'm afraid, I did not succeed very well. Seems like I have not yet found the propper settings for my Motif. Can I describe?:
My Motif is connected via USB.
I set the channels to omni, set local to off, and midi to USB.
With sonar, of course, I use the song or the pattern mode.
After importing the Yamaha_motif.ins-file, I can read all the patch names in the patch browser and also can hear the different instruments.
Now, as long as I choose track one and, in the track properties browse through the patches I get all the original Motif sounds. But when I do the same on other tracks I only get the dry sound of the patch. A distinct example is the Auto-wawa Guitar. On track one it will sound as expected, while on track two i lose the wawa-effect. So, maybe, there stil is something wrong with my channel settings.
I'd really be happy if you or someone in this list could give me some help.
Thanks in advance.
Wolfgang

Wolf,
This is a follow up to your problem regarding not getting modulation to respond when you are in song mode. Upon further testing modulation responds on my machine regardless whether I am in song or pattern mode And the event view does show modulation events indeed present. So if you are still experiencing the problem it may be specific to your machine. In that case I would suggest that you re-initialize your motif to restore it to the factory preset and that should pretty much take care of things for you. Be sure to save any thing you may have created on it before re-initialize it.
I hope that helps.

hi, this is a question to all those who with CT use the yamaha motif.
I don't manage to get the modulation controller one work with any organ patch I assign to a sonar track. Turning the modulation wheel also doesn't have any affect. While I'm using sonar I switch to the song mode. Now when
I turn on the voice mode - just to try - the modulation wheel works properly.
Can anyone give me a hint? Thanks!
Wolfgang
