Hey Bill this usually happens if you forget to lets say turn on your sound module, and then shut down sonar, and reopen if with the module connected at times it screws up the chain of instrumentation you have installed, including midi inputs and outputs. This is why I always when training my clients tell them to first ensure that all their equipment is turned on before going in to sonar.

Dear Wolfgang,

Might you have the Frontier TranzPort or another control surface attached to
your PC? When I have this problem, I too hear random MIDI percussion
sounds.

I have found that sometimes Windows or SONAR (I am not sure which or
either!) gets confused and I have to reset the input and output values for
the port settings of my TranzPort.

Run SONAR and go to Options | Controllers/Surfaces. Tab to the list of
control surfaces and highlight the one you use. Press RIGHT ARROW to move
to Input or Output columns. Then press ENTER to open a list of ports you
can select.

HTH,
Bill
