Yep, and luckily, some people remain open to new things after age 30. *grin* For example, I always associated Steely Dan's ultra-smooth hipness with as you say, elevator music. Then, I saw a 10-piece band perform their stuff live in a bar, very very energetically. Now, I totally love them.
Don't forget the longevity part of the equation. Bach is timeless, whether you like that style of music or not. And, the Beatles wil still be popular in fifty years - whereas nobody will remember Britney Spears or Katie Perry or hopefully, the Black-eyed Peas.
