Sharon,

The best tool I've found for learning a new piece is Band in a Box. You can
pull in the MIDI file and it will generate the chords for you. Then you can
silence the background instruments or melody to learn to play along. Tempo and
key signature can be changed very easily to learn it in any key and at any
tempo. The basic BIAB package is less expensive than Sonar and you can get
scripts for it from the MIDI Mag site.

Subject: [ddots-l] OT, Using Midi Files to Learn Songs by Ear

  Hi there!

I'd like to learn more music by ear independently, but my hearing isn't the
best, and the music might play too fast for me to catch all the notes and
chords. Is there a way that I can download midi files and take them apart so
that I can hear the details, like, say, make the right hand part play, slow it
down, hold the note, etc? Can Sonar work with someone else's midi production?

Any input would be much appreciated.

  thanks!

  Sharon
