I have a few good options in my studio.

I like the TL audio Ivory mic pres, though they are in the $1200 range. I also
like the Focusrite octo-pre it is in the $1000 range and there is a great
alternative to trying to get a vintage Neve, lots of up keep on those, it is
called the Ventech and is a mottle of the Neave 10-73, in the $3000 range.

PS, SE electronics make some great mics, I am an artist endorser and dealer for
those.

Subject: [ddots-l] Question abou t pre amps

  Hello:

Since we all use an external mixer with our computer when recording with
Sonar; does anyone on here also use a separate pre amp, or are the ones in the
mixer enough if we're using a high quality mixer? Is a separate pre amp really
necessary, especially to make vocals or kick drums sound fatter, as in the case
of hip hop? I'd really appreciate anyone's feedback on this before I invest in
a separate pre amp.

  Thanks.
