yes they are called false strings wich have a micorscopic hole in the wire. very difficult to get a nice tuned unison.

Dave, you can get this slightly phasing sound when a piano is slightly out of tune. Some of this can be fixed by tuning all of the strings so that when you play a given note, on it's own, it sounds clear and dead. Meaning, no unisons out of tune on a note and no phasing unisons from strings on the note at all. Of course, every piano is different and some pianos suffer from vary bad phasing. in other words, there can be other harmonics on the strings that you just can't get rid of. that may be what I was hearing in this particular piano over all but, that won't account for the 6th D as that's just out of tune.

Phil,

You mentioned this in terms of the tuning. Can you give me a spot-on education on what you mean when you say you've never been wild about phasing on pianos? What does the phasing do to the sound, tone, and/or tuning?

Dave

O yeh. Still smiling here! Still don't like the 6th D, being particularly out of tune when compared to the rest of the instrument. When tuning pianos at college, I would have been made to tune that note again and rightly so. To me, that makes the whole thing sound inconsistent. Not personally keen on the phasing of the sound. That's what I love about sound. One mans greatest piano ever is another mans out of tune out of phase sounding piano, smile. Of course, this is coming from someone who's a piano tuner so, I am never wild about phasing on pianos anyway.

Hi Phil,

I too notice tuning issues and the phasing sound when notes were held.
This maybe deliberate as the phasing didn't sound digital, plus, they seem to have chosen a piece of music that had a lot of held chords almost pointing out the phasing quality.
The imperfections made it sound like a real piano.
I also slightly detune instruments in my horn section to create a more believable horn section sound. The problem with some of these other pianos, is they sometimes sound too pure, all real pianos have their faults whether it be tuning issues or just that the notes resonate too long... I could hear the body of this piano like someone was sitting at it, not triggering it from a mother keyboard.

One other thing I liked about this piano when taking a quick look at spec, it isn't 70GB like the Quantum Leap Piano, I believe this virtual piano is only 6GB.

That's my personal take on it, the question is, is Phil still smiling ha ha.

Seriously Phil, I must thank you for your work with Superior, had a storming gig last Week and the dance floor had people on it from the second song of the night.
Steve W

Wasn't epersonally that impressed with this myself. It didn't entirely sound in tune. I could hear a slight phasing on the notes and as for the 6th D, it's frankly, out of tune.

Wow Kevin,

If I hadn't been told that it was a Virtual piano, I would have just excepted that it was a quality recorded piano.

There's some great products that work with Kontakt, such ashame these companies don't have these products using Dimension Pro.
