Hey there's a copy of the xg synth which does work under xp, I don't know
where you could find it as it is discontinued, but you can research and see
if it is still atainable...

Subject: [ddots-l] Softsynths for MIDI playback in Windows

Hi all,
I'm looking for a good softsynth for Windows. This isn't my main
production machine, which is already running XP. I recently upgraded another
machine, and am now running XP Pro. I was running 98SE, and was using the
Yamaha SYXG50 softsynth for general Windows MIDI playback. I've heard Yamaha
has since discontinued this synth, and I doubt my copy, purchased several
years ago, would work under XP. What have people been using as a softsynth
to just play back MIDI under Windows, E.G. not in Sonar? I know Windows
comes with a GS Wavetable synth, but I've never really fallen in love with
it. I wish I could keep using SYXG, but if it ain't available, it ain't
available. Thanks for any help.
Jayson
