If the track had had been recorded there would it have been any better? Well, maybe a little possibly. Would you want to pay 70 grand though LOL. Phil replied: the other issue here is that a lot of record companies are only mastering for MP3 so by the time you Dum down you're sound for that excellent quality then, you wouldn't hear it anyway. Hmm, reminds me of an article that I read in Sound On sound. Apparently, the Sizzer Sisters had tracked the album in Logic with some MOTU 2408's. They then took the MOTU's to a studio where they have Pro Tools and an SSL concel and recorded that at 24 96 so that they could add a bit of that analogue sound to the mix. Sort of see why they would do that however, ultimately the album was going on to CD so, it was all going to be dithered down anyway. Paul wrote: The drums sound very close to the real thing. Well they do to me anyway. Arguablely, if they continue to get any better sounding with the right programming of course will we see loads of drummers breaking their sticks over their knees and joining the foreign legion. Phil replied: I know of drummers who are not bothering to mic up kits anymore because it's too much hassle. They are purchasing Superior Drummer 2 and programming it instead. I haven't even got a mixing desk anymore. Phil replied: on the other hand, there's still a place for getting people to mix and master you're material that is, if you don't have the experience. As for me, I only have a mixing concel for live work. If you go to: http://www.philmuir.com/ And locate the flash player (you can quickly do that with Jaws by pressing the letter F twice quickly to locate the play button) then, you can listen to a track called "Overtaken By Love." It's the first song in the playlist. The song was written and sung by a friend of mine, Gordon clowrey. I played/arranged all of the instruments and did all of the drum programming, mixing mastering etc. The BV's were sung by myself and my wife, Sarah. Sarah came up with some of the really cool vocal arrangements for this particular tune and as usual, gave an honest critic of the mix. That's the cool thing about Sarah, she has great ears and really does know what's required and what should be left out. This was all tracked in Sonar. All of the BV's, mixing and mastering was done in Windows 7 Professional in SonarX64 with Superior Drummer 2.2.1 64bit, on a couple of PC's, both of which are core 2 duo. The fastest one is only 2.13GHZ and this one which is my laptop is 1.6GHZ. Just shows you what can be achieved on two fairly lolly systems, at least by today's standards. BTW, the snare that I used is the NirZ custom however, I used the centre hits, rather than the side ones as the side hits, would have been a bit too ringy for the tune. Enjoy!
