Yes, there are lots of web articles on how equalizers work. Any good book on mixing or recording will have this info as well. Or even the built-in help for the particular equalizer plug-in you are checking out.

Gain adjusts the amount of cut or boost applied to specific frequencies.
Frequency adjusts where the boost or cut happens.
Q adjusts the width of the area of frequencies being adjusted. Lower Q values mean a wider range of frequencies, and a higher Q value means a narrower band of frequencies will be affected.

About filter type: you will want to read about the difference between low and high pass, shelf, and parametric kinds of equalization curves.

If you have a good ear for music, you can convert that knowledge of note pitch to frequencies. For example, fourth octave A on the piano is 440 HZ. Double that to 880 HZ and you get the note an octave higher. Halve 440 and you get 220 HZ, 3rd octave A.

You need to experiment a lot, boosting different frequency ranges, and listening to how the sound changes. The more you do this, the quicker you will get at finding the frequencies you think need to be adjusted.

Hi chris,
No I don't quite understand how to use the different types of filters
available, frequency, Q, etc..
Is there somewhere I can get this knowledge to read, such as a web article
or something like that?
I am not too computer savvy
So be a little patient with me.
I'll be very thankful for your help.

My first question would be:
Have you thoroughly explored the Sonitus EQ that comes with Sonar, including the four bands of EQ available through the inspector? Do you understand the
types of filters available, frequency, Q, etc.
and how adjusting the parameters affects the sound?

Yes Waves and other companies make EQ plug-ins, but we already have access
to a great one.

Actually, you also have the linear-phase EQ as well, if you have Sonar
Producer, if you are looking for something for mastering.

The various Waves plug-ins are accessible in that their parameters are shown
in the inspector. You won't be able to load presets that come with the
plug-ins, but you can certainly save your own.

Like I said though, we already have a great EQ that is accessible.
Learning to adjust an EQ to get the results you are after is much more
important than having access to several different EQ plug-ins that all do
the same basic thing.
