Hi Brian,

You can use midi to drive a sampler which is where the really convincing sounds come in. The problem with loops is that they sound like - well loops. That's to say that they're not flexible, they just keep repeating the same phrase exactly without any subtlety, or to be frank, musicallity.

If you use sample libraries or soundfonts then you can make all the tiny changes in rhythm, colour and velocity that make a performance really come alive.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm not a big fan of loops.

Hey:
The reason I don't sequence drums using midi is because I've never actually figured midi out. Do you think this would be a wise move for drums? I've just always found that the midish drum sounds I've heard were kind of fake and I'm looking for really good hiphop/rap drums. By using the wav files, it is very easy for people to create drum loops and I thought there should be an easy process for me to do the same. If midi is it, just let me know.
