Hi,

Both sequencing and using loops are widely used in hiphop and electronics.
If you're talking about ballad, rock, or country that require really live sounds, you probably don't want to use loops.
Although, there are also bunch of live drum loop samples for those genres which you can assemble quickly. They organized bunch of different groove for verses, choruses, fills, intros, endings, and bridges.
It'd be good to learn drum programming, but if you're not good at sequencing or never played drums before, it might be also good idea to use loops.
However, since you're looking for hip hop, drum loops are often good ways to start. A lot of hip hop drums just repeat anyways.
Sometimes, they even repeat same thing over and over for both verse and chorus. What makes each section different is vocal in hip hop.
If you buy a sample cd, it often has construction kits which has each instrument part on a different file. Also, drum has single hits you can make your own drumkit.
Some sample loop companies you might want to check out are Big Fish Audio, Ueberschall, and E-lab.
Especially, I like URBAN JOINTZ from Ueberschall and da nu rnb hip hop from Big Fish Audio.

Hi Brian,

You can use midi to drive a sampler which is where the really convincing sounds come in. The problem with loops is that they sound like - well loops. That's to say that they're not flexible, they just keep repeating the same phrase exactly without any subtlety, or to be frank, musicallity.

If you use sample libraries or soundfonts then you can make all the tiny changes in rhythm, colour and velocity that make a performance really come alive.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm not a big fan of loops.

Hey:
The reason I don't sequence drums using midi is because I've never actually figured midi out. Do you think this would be a wise move for drums? I've just always found that the midish drum sounds I've heard were kind of fake and I'm looking for really good hiphop/rap drums. By using the wav files, it is very easy for people to create drum loops and I thought there should be an easy process for me to do the same. If midi is it, just let me know.
