[ddots-l] fading effects in and out?

Is it possible to fade an effect in or out of a portion of a given track?
For example,if I have a track with clean guitar and use the distortion amp
sym effect, is it possible to slect part of the track and have the effect
build from dry to as wet as it can get?
I want the distortion to build from clean to dirty (if that makes sense).
