When i turn it on after i start sonar it doesn't even show up in the input and
output menu. it will only show up if i turn it on before opening sonar. Also,
when i go to banks and patches none of them are showing up there, but i know
the instrument definition file is there because in the instruments selection it
shows up as roland fantom patch.

Interesting. Like I said, it works for me. The fantom shows in the input
and outputs list, but if I turn it on before I start sonar, it always screws
up...

Well here's the thing, the fantom shows up in the midi devices menu and i
have checked it in both input and output. Also, I just tried what you suggested
with no changes.

Omar,
This may sound dumb but... Try disconnecting the fantom from the
computer or interface, open sonar, and reconnect it.
I have had this problem, and for some reason, its hit or miss on
weather the fantom shows in sonar. If I connect after starting sonar though,
things seem to show up fine. After connecting, sonar will give you a message
asking if you want to allow the fantom to be listed in the input and output
lists. Just tab to okay, and its good to go.
If this isn't the problem, then I'll have to do some thinking, but
connecting after you open sonar is worth a try.

I just set up my fantom x with sonar 8.5, and i imported the instrument
definition files and went to assign the midi outputs to the fantom, but it
doesn't seem to be allowing me to do that. The outputs still show that they're
assigned to the behringer midi controler which i was using before i set up the
fantom. i've checked the fantom in the midi devices, and the behringer midi
controler isn't even hooked up anymore.
